Cedar Bracelet, Globe Museum
In 1901 the British brought the first Boer prisoners of war to Bermuda, where they were imprisoned on islands in the Great Sound. To pass the time and make money they used natural materials found on the island such as Bermuda cedar, animal bones and coins to make things. This bracelet was hand carved out of cedar, featuring five West Highland terriers and an elephant. It is on display at the Globe Museum in St. George’s. These beautiful items reflect the skills of 4,600 men who spent years of their lives here. Many of them never returned home and are buried on Long Island.
